Description

Has large kitchen and dining area for 30 covers.
50 / 50 mix of passing trade and club members.
Open over 20 years..

The Yorkshire Gliding Club is looking for a new operator for their on-site cafe.

The cafe premises occupies a good portion of the top floor of the clubhouse, surrounded by panoramic views of the airfield, Vale of York and the North York Moors. The airfield is also close to the local White Horse of Kilburn and Airman's Chapel/Scotch Corner popular beauty spots.
As well as being the home of the gliding club, the cafe enjoys regular visits from walkers, groups of cyclists, and motorcyclists.
We are well placed for access, being on the footpath to the White Horse and the Cleveland Way. Road access is good from the A170. We have plenty of free on-site parking, and also other small car parks nearby, on the club's land.

The primary requirement of the catering operation is to serve the gliding club members and guests. However we do encourage visits by members of the public and there is great potential to build the business. The previous operator has had signs placed at the junction with the A170, and on the local club road. They have been effective in attracting members of the public to the cafe.

What we require

A caterer to serve breakfasts, lunches and snacks from 9am to 5pm at least 5 days a week, which must include weekends and bank holidays
Some hot meals to be provided
Hot and cold sandwiches
Hot and cold drinks
Cakes, snacks and ice-cream
A discount for members of the club
NO RENT
A small monthly contribution to the energy/running costs of the kitchen and cafe area is required
Card payments a must (but cash is optional)
There may be the opportunity to serve occasional evening meals, for example when we have visiting pilots or special events. This will be discussed with the operator in advance.
What we provide

A newly-refurbished cafe and kitchen (has recently been awarded a score of '5' by Hambleton Council)
A private, lockable kitchen
A selection of fridges, freezers, and a lockable 'grab and go' display fridge
A commercial dishwasher with rapid cycle
A new filter coffee machine and bean grinder
A new countertop water boiler
An LPG gas-powered oven, hob, grill, deep-fat fryer, toastie/panini grill
Microwave
A collection of cutlery, crockery, ovenware and tableware
Toilets and other facilities are provided by the club
Around 35 covers inside, with further covers outside
Free Wifi
Free parking for members, visitors and cafe users
The gliding club is open all year round, every day except Christmas Day. It is staffed, and also attended by a group of volunteers to run the operation every day.

The club currently has around 200 members. As we are a prime gliding site and one of the oldest in the UK, we regularly attract groups of visiting glider pilots on ‘gliding expeditions’.
In summer we can launch over 50 gliders per day, and the pilots will often bring families and friends with them.

We have accommodation on-site in the form of caravans and basic bedrooms for visiting pilots. We also have a bar (open evenings only) which is run by the club.
Members will often stay overnight through spring, summer and autumn.

Although the venue is affected by the weather – being on top of a large hill on the edge of the Moors – there will be custom from club members as well as the potential to attract members of the public. We are well-situated on a popular circular route, around a 30-minute walk to the next nearest cafe (at the National Park Centre).

We’re also currently working with the Parks Authority to create a new footpath and to improve public access, which should further increase footfall.

Winter days will be quieter as there is less flying, and also will be fewer walkers and cyclists. There may be the potential to reduce service hours.
